Ready to stretch your legs and get some fresh air? One of the most beautiful hiking spots in New Mexico is right here near Gallup, so lace up your boots and visit Red Rock Park!

The Pyramid Rock Trail

There are three main routes at Red Rock Park, each offering scenic views of the unique formations and arid landscape. If you’re there to see the soaring Pyramid Rock, the Pyramid Rock Trail will lead you up an 800-foot increase in elevation to the top of the breathtaking summit. The trail spans three miles, rising up to nearly 7,500 feet above the land below.

The Church Rock Trail and Canyon Loop

Starting around the main campgrounds, the Church Rock Trail rises through park, gaining 560 feet of elevation before you arrive at an amazing vista of the Church Rock formation, a group of monolithic sandstone spires that evoke the steeples of a cathedral. The mildest elevation gain is found on the Red Rock Canyon Loop, an exploration of the canyon bottom’s trails and dunes. No matter what route you take, remember to wear sturdy hiking boots and bring plenty of water, as there won’t be much shade out there on the trail.

Camping at the Park

If you want to stay longer and enjoy the serenity of the wilderness, the park offers campgrounds to facilitate your stay. You can set up your spot at either the main campgrounds which lead to the trails, or the west ground, and you’ll have access to picnic areas, restrooms, showers, as well as hookups for water and electricity. If you choose to stick around, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the amazing landscape as well as the Red Rock Museum, which details the site’s importance to early cultures going back thousands of years. Remember to call ahead to reserve your space.

Location

Red Rock Park is located at 825 Outlaw Road, Church Rock, New Mexico 87311. The onsite convention center resumes events in August, and the other facilities, including the rodeo arena, have also started hosting summer events. The museum is open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
