Keep The Kids Entertained On Road Trips

Happy Family Day. Dad, mom and daughter enjoying road trip sitting on back car, Parents and children traveling in holiday at sea beach, family having fun in summer vacation on beach with automobile

If you are planning a road trip this summer, then you have probably considered everything. You have mapped out where to take restroom breaks and which exits have the best coffee shops for a little pick-me-up. If you have kids, then obviously have thought about fun activities to do once you get to your destination. Have you planned, however, how to keep them entertained during the road trip? These days children seem to preoccupy themselves with an iPad or some other electronic device, but you do not want your kid glued to a screen. Afterall, the journey is half the adventure, so here are some ideas suggested by Redbook that you can use to entertain your children on your upcoming summer road trip.

Bring Along Art Supplies

One way, that your kids can entertain themselves is by bringing along art supplies. For your littler ones, you could bring crayons and a coloring book. If you are heading to the beach, you could opt for a coloring book with beach landscapes. You could do the same if you are going camping in the mountains. The older kids may do better with a blank sketching pad and color pencils.

Two Person Games

If you did bring a sketching pad along for the road trip, then your kids can use it for more than just doodling. Two of the kids can use the sketch pad to play games like Hangman or Tic-Tac-Toe. You could be in for a long drive, depending on where the destination is, so suggest that your kids make a tournament out of the Tic-Tac-Toe or Hangman. The one who wins three out of five is dubbed the winner.

Games for the Entire Car

Two-person games can be fun, but they are limiting in that they only involve two people. There are other classic car games that all passengers can participate in playing. I Spy is always a great go to on a car ride. Other games that can take some time which is perfect for those long road trips are the ABC game and the Car Tag game. The ABC game is where each individual in the car who is playing must find a word that begins with each letter in the alphabet. They can use car tags, car brands and models, restaurants, cities, and more. Of course, the Car Tag game is pretty self-explanatory. The player who finds the most car tags from different states after a certain timeframe is dubbed the winner.

Music & Pit Stops

When you need to take a break from the games, maybe you can let the windows down, turn up the music, and sing at the top of your lungs with the kids. Maybe you can let each of your children select a song that they want to sing. Of course, there will inevitably need to be times when you need to make a pit stop. Whether it is to fill up on gas or grab a snack, it is good to just stop and stretch your legs. This part can be fun, too. Find free local landmarks or tourist traps like the Cadillac Ranch that is in north Texas in Amarillo. Whatever you do, make sure to enjoy the journey with your kids.
