The Annual Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial returns to Red Rock for its 99th year, and you have a full week to come out and witness long-running traditions honored right here in Gallup.
100 Years of Art and Culture
The Ceremonial is one of New Mexico’s oldest public events, with the original ceremonies beginning in September, 1922. Nearly a century ago, the event began with dancers showcasing the traditions of their communities while traders sold indigenous artwork. The promotion of the art and heritage remains central to the event, and since the initial gatherings, the Ceremonial has grown to include other aspects that have become apart of the culture and over the years as well. Horsemanship and stock handling have played a vital role in the region, and you’re sure to see feats of athleticism through days of rodeo events.
At the exhibition hall, artists will display a wide range of paintings, rugs, jewelry, and other works, and a juried art show will award creativity, skill, and authenticity. The art will be up for sale, and the piece you have your eye on might just win high acclaim from the judges. There will also be arts and crafts vendors in the courtyard.
Dancing has been a part of the Ceremonials since the beginning, and for this year’s event, you can expect both traditional dance as well as contemporary styles on display. The Inter-Tribal Pow Wow will bring performers together from a host of different tribes so that everyone can witness cherished traditions and the vibrant regalia that represent communities from near and far. You’ll also hear singing in several unique styles.
