Thankfully, there are several things you can do this season to stay cool when things begin to warm up. WDG Public Health offers several ways to help beat the heat.

1. Lightweight Wardrobe

The first thing you can do to keep cool during the summer is to pay attention to what you wear. Often summer clothes are bright or pastel colors, which does help. The color of your outfit is not enough, though. Pay attention to the fabrics that you wear during this season. Opt for cotton or linen garments.

2. Plan Your Outdoor Activity Accordingly

If you are going to play or be active outside, then you may want to pay attention to when you do these activities. For example, if you enjoy a jog, then it may be best to jog in the early morning or late evening hours. These times of a day are not near as warm as it is during the middle of the day.

3. Eat Smaller, Refreshing Meals

Even what you eat can play a part in staying cool during the summer. If you are cooking large hot meals, then your kitchen is going to be hot. The kitchen space, however, will not be the only thing creating heat. Your core temperature can rise from eating warmer and larger meals. Opt for refreshing foods like salads and fresh fruits or vegetables. Eating smaller meals also helps you stay cool.

4. Stay in the Shade

Embrace the shade. The shade is your friend this summer season. Whether you take refuge under a canopy, tent, or outdoor umbrella, the shade brings solace from the harsh rays of the sun. While a tent or canopy can bring shade to several people, you can provide yourself with shade or covering with a sunhat or a handheld umbrella or parasol. Of course, if the heat is still too unbearable even in the shade, then head indoors. There are plenty of ways to still have fun in the summer without being in the sun.

5. Play in the Water

You can stay refreshed and cool on summer days by playing in the water. There are plenty of ways you can have fun in the water. You and your family can head to the pool, lake, or ocean. When you are not away on vacation, you can play in the sprinkler or have a water balloon fight.
