An Overview

The Navajo Code Talker 10K & 29K race starts on Sept. 11 at 7:30 a.m. Be sure to arrive early so that you are ready to participate. It is part of the Navajo Parks Race Series and will be held at Arizona 264 and Loop Road in Window Rock, AZ. There is a $25 entry fee, and no prize money is awarded to top finishers. However, those who sign up will get a T-shirt featuring the likeness of famed Navajo code talker Thomas Begay. Furthermore, participants will receive a medal or ribbon, a race bib, and a copy of the Navajo Nation Trail guide.

A Look at the Course

Secondly, as the race day comes closer, it’s helpful to look at the course. The main course is a 6.2-mile loop. It leaves the NN Museum, circling it once before leaving out on the Museum Trail. The trail goes to the WR Dam and onto the Fish & Wildlife trail system. Moreover, it will drop into the historic tribal government complex before going to the WR Park. At this point, the trail goes back toward the museum, where the race began. However, be aware that race officials may slightly alter the course if necessary.

Other Features and Information

Thirdly, though some of the course follows a paved trail, most of it is not paved. For instance, 75% of the race trail will be over dirt, so wear durable, quality footwear. Additionally, the trail starts at an elevation of 6,830 feet. Consequently, the high altitude can present some challenges for runners. Importantly, hydrate yourself well in the days leading up to the race and on race day.

Furthermore, the race is still young, having begun in 2018. Thus, this is the fifth year of the event. The race even went on during the height of COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021. Race divisions include male and female categories as well as separate age categories. For example, the youngest age group is 14 and younger, while the oldest age group is 70+. Nearly 200 runners participated last year.
