Make A New Year’s Resolution You’ll Enjoy Keeping

2023 new year's resolutions concept

People fail New Year’s resolutions all the time. However, the most common reason is that they don’t enjoy keeping them. In other words, instead of doing something they look forward to, they dread it. Instead of failing year after year, try something different for 2023.

Even if you have good intentions and feel motivated, it’s important to choose resolutions that you’ll enjoy keeping. So, stop failing and enjoy the sweet taste of success.

Choose Just One Resolution

Typically, people choose multiple things to change or do. Well, it doesn’t take long before they lose sight of a few. Whether due to a busy schedule or a lack of support, their long lists become smaller and smaller. To prevent that from happening to you, choose just one New Year’s resolution.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with writing several things down. However, carefully review each one and then select a single resolution that’s the most important to you. In addition, make your resolution concrete. In other words, choose something attainable.

As an example, say you want to lose 50 pounds. Consider a resolution that will help you achieve your goal. Perhaps it’s joining a gym, participating in 5K walk events, or meeting up with a friend to work out in the park.

Establish a Plan

Making resolutions haphazardly doesn’t work. You need to plan. Rather than coming up with something at the last minute, speed weeks or even months considering all your options. Not only will that give you adequate time to select the right New Year’s resolution but also prepare and get excited about it.

Don’t Expect Perfection

Again, if you make your resolution about losing weight but you fail to meet specific targets, don’t feel bad. Regardless of the resolution, you’re going to face challenges. After all, as you go through 2023, things in your life will change. Continue to focus on your resolution but without expectations of everything going perfectly.

Also, when things don’t go right, remind yourself why you made that particular New Year’s resolution. In other words, don’t quit. Instead, modify your plan if needed and keep pushing forward. That way, you won’t feel stressed, which will make it easier to keep the resolution.

Determine a Start Date

Just because Jan. 1 is the first day of 2023 doesn’t mean that’s when you need to start working on your resolution. As an example, perhaps you’re going to work for a new company. Maybe you’re scheduled for surgery. Regardless of the situation, start the resolution process at a time that’ll help you succeed.

Keep Track of Your Progress

First, don’t write things every day. As with the weight loss scenario, you’re not going to see a difference every time you step on the scales. A better idea is to set weekly or bi-weekly milestones. Then, journal your progress. As you look at each milestone, you’ll see how far you’ve come.

Remember the Past but Focus on the Future

This is another way to enjoy keeping your New Year’s resolutions. It’s okay to look at failures from prior years. Use them as encouragement and motivation. At the same time, you want to look forward as you move toward your goal.
